This major, long-term exhibit opens on January 15, 2014 and explores the lesser-known heroes of Brooklyn’s anti-slavery movement — ordinary residents, black and white — who shaped their neighborhoods, city and nation with a revolutionary vision of freedom and equality.

Weeksville, an intentional African American community exemplifies a crucial aspect of freedom in Brooklyn’s anti-slavery movement. In the spirit of creativity, which inspired the founders and residents of the historic community, Weeksville Heritage Center’s long-term exhibition employs superhero imagery to re-imagine alter-egos of key Weeksville figures.

Irondale’s exhibit will focus on social change through storytelling. The exhibit will explore the abolitionists as a group of men and women, both black and white, who used public spaces and printed materials to convey the horrors of slavery. In doing so, they created a performance culture of their own.
